Admirers of Jesus

5 February 2010

Yesterday, in response to the Family’s National Prayer Breakfast, an alternate American Prayer Hour was held. The Family is a fundamentalist Christian organization, which amongst other things, is a proponent of the “Kill the Gays” bill in Uganda.

The Right Reverend V. Gene Robinson, IXth Bishop of New Hampshire, gave a moving speech at the American Prayer Hour in protest, and I feel moved to copy down part of the transcript:

You can talk about Jesus all day, but if you are not doing what Jesus would have you do, then it matters not. So, God save us from admirers of Jesus.  What Jesus wants is not admirers only, but followers. And we can pat each other on the back and talk about that Jesus and “what great stories he told” and “wasn’t he a great guy,” and then act in absolute contravention to that to which he called us. Jesus doesn’t need any more admirers; what Jesus wants is disciples and followers.
