The living’s good

3 August 2010

I leave for Boston in less than 3 weeks. I’ve already started thinking about things I’m going to miss about North Carolina, and the South more broadly. There are certainly a lot of things I am not going to miss, but I’m looking on the bright side right now.

  • pulled pork–more broadly, barbecue as a food group, not an activity
  • Cheerwine
  • Cook-Out
  • “ma’am” and “sir”
  • chivalry–men open doors for women and walk them home at night because that’s what we’re for
  • Croakies worn year-round
  • cicadas
  • the word “y’all”
  • the dominance of ACC Basketball
  • Southern preppy style — bowties, sports coats with khakis
  • springs that begin in March; summers that end in October
  • James Taylor as an icon

That’s all for the moment. Feel free to add your own in the comments.
