9/11 Day of Service

12 September 2010

I spent the day yesterday bouncing around the Greater Boston area, visiting some of the various sites that the Hope in Action campaign through the Life Together program and the broader Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts was hosting. In solidarity with President Obama’s call to service last year, and in remembrance of the tragedy 9 years ago, we came to serve alongside our brothers and sisters. We protest against the violence and hatred of that day with humility and love–the opposite virtues–rather than with violence and hatred as some are wont to do. This is what America is about. This is what Christianity is about: Love in the face of hatred.

The sites I visited were:

  • Emery House, West Newbury (served by The Crossing, Ecclesia Ministries, and Church of the Good Shepherd, Watertown)
  • Tufts Park, Medford (served by Grace Church, Medford)
  • Helping Hands Pantry, Quincy (served by All Saints, Brookline)
  • Church of the Holy Spirit, Mattapan
  • St. Mary’s Church, Dorchester
  • Blackstone Elementary School, South End (served by St. Stephen’s Church, South End)
