“Rise up, my fair one”

24 April 2011

Beautiful Eastertide anthem, which always takes me back to Easter at the Chapel of the Cross. Obviously, I’m a little homesick right now. The Advent is divine—as one must imagine—but this is my first Easter as an Episcopalian not at the Chapel of the Cross and I miss it.

At any rate, the text is from the King James Version of Song of Solomon 2:10-13, which is to be included amongst the Bible’s most beautiful expressions of love (which my friend Gracie and I were talking about on Thursday).

Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
The flowers appear upon the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
